SOURCES OF WATER

Two types of sources are used for water supply
  •   Ground

  •   Surface

Surface Water   There are 44 rivers traversing the State, all of which are monsoon fed and fast flowing. The total run off from these rivers amount to 702 MCM while the utilizable yield is only 427 MCM.  But not all the run off is "utilizable" due to lack of storage structures and on account of salinity intrusion.  The utilization of surface water for drinking purpose is largely through piped water supply schemes.

Source-wise classification of piped Water Supply Schemes

1 River Run-off Schemes
2 Artificial Reservoir based schemes
3 Lake based Schemes
4 Bore well / Tube well based Schemes
5 Sub-surface flow based Schemes

The water, collected from surface or ground water sources, is conveyed to treatment plant for removal of impurities. The treated water after adding quality control contents is stored in clean water reservoirs and pumped to overhead tanks directly into the distribution system for supplying to the customers through individual connection (domestic/ non-domestic / industrial). In addition, street taps are provided for domestic consumption.
